AdSense Tips: The Power Of AdSense Forums

Those of you who have been following the various AdSense forums -- and that's everyone, right? -- will have noticed that Google has been making a couple of little changes: Four ads are back in the ad units instead of two; and the latest themed ad unit (the one with the cute dogs for the Chinese New Year) didn't override our ad settings and put borders back where there shouldn't be any, like the previous themes did.

That's all good news.

Having four ads in my ad units was driving me crazy. It wasn't that I saw any significant drop in overall revenues but having spent hours optimizing my sites to show four-ad units, to see the layout of my pages changed by Google without a heads-up was pretty frustrating.

I just wish that Google would let us know what they were thinking. Even if we couldn't change their decision, it would certainly help us to prepare so that we can make the most of it.

That's it as far as my complaints go though, because I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the way Google responded to our comments.

A lot of people had been complaining about only receiving two ads instead of the four they'd planned for. And many publishers had pointed out that the borders in their themed ads and the loss of their optimization had hit their CTR. It's good to see that the folks at Google follow what we're saying and act on it.

In fact, I really think that these forums are one of the greatest things about building up AdSense. (Yeah, I know I'm preaching to the choir here but I think it's worth saying.) I talk a lot in my books and presentations about the different ways to optimize a site for AdSense, but these forums are really some of the best resources for new ideas. Everyone who uses AdSense should be reading them on a regular basis, checking out what other people are saying, implementing the recommendations made by people who have been there and done that, and at the very least getting moral support for the times when things don't go quite the way you planned.

These AdSense forums really work... they certainly worked on Google.

AdSense Tips: Site Targeting, Part II

Well, the forums have been buzzing lately with news that we can now see whether our Web pages have been site targeted, how much money we're earning for CPC ads and how much for CPM ads.

For those of you who missed it, all you have to do to see whether you've been site-targeted and how much benefit it brought you is visit your Advanced Reports page. Choose AdSense for content as the product, then ask to see data by 'Individual Ad Unit' from the drop-down menu. You'll be able to tick a checkbox marked "Show data by targeting type - contextual or site."

And what can you expect to see there?

Two things. First, whether or not an advertiser has chosen that page for site targeting. (Even small sites and small pages get picked so you could well be surprised -- and flattered.) And second, the eCPM for those pages.

What many people have seen though is that the eCPM for those pages is much lower than the eCPM for the pages with contextual ads. So many people have been seeing this, in fact, that Google added a new entry to their blog explaining that "site targeted ads are most likely appearing on lower performing pages within your account - in other words, pages requiring a lower eCPM to win the AdWords ad auction."

I think that's really the most important information I need to know about pages that have been site targeted. What Google is telling me is that if an advertiser site-targets a page on my website and succeeds in putting his ad there, it's because that page wasn't making me much money in the first place.

Sure, I'm pleased that a site-targeted campaign is increasing that page's earnings a little. But what I really want to know is why that page was making so little money that a site-targeted bid was able to be successful.

So am I going to be checking to see whether any of my pages are showing site-targeted ads?

Sure. And then I'm going to be comparing the layout and content of that page with my higher earning pages to see what I've been doing wrong. The question I'm going to be asking then is whether those site-targeted ads will go away once I start doing things right...

AdSense Tips: The Five Most Important Things

Whether you're just starting out with AdSense or whether you've been using it for years, the success of your ads will depend on knowing five absolutely essential pieces of information about AdSense:

1. AdSense Can Make You A Huge Heap Of Cash

Lots of people make the mistake of believing that AdSense is only good for bringing a site a few extra pennies a month. Wrong! AdSense can fund your lifestyle - if you get it right.

2. Junk Sites Get Junk Income

But just because it's possible for a site to make a lot of money with AdSense, it doesn't mean that any site can make a lot of money with AdSense. Your site must have good content that can attract users on its own merit. There are a lot of different strategies available for producing good
content for your site. You'll need to use them if you want to create the sort of site that makes real money.

3. Your Choice Of Ads Matter

One of the first things that you'll have to do when you join AdSense is to pick the types of ads you want to display.
Success relies on following certain principles that encourage users to click and persuades them that they've got a reason to do so. You'll need to know those principles.

4. You Can Influence The Ads You Receive!

Here's a little known AdSense secret: you do have some control over the ads that get served on your site. That control isn't unlimited - but it is worth exercising. It's also a little
complicated but it's got a lot do with keyword hotspots located in each Web page. (I explain it all in my book, Google AdSense Secrets.) That's definitely something you need to know!

5. Your Stats Are Your Best Friend

The stats you get with your AdSense account might look complicated and well, a bit dull... but they're packed with useful information that can have a massive effect on your revenues. To make real money with AdSense, you need to know what your stats are telling, what they're not telling you and where you can find out more.

There's a lot you need to know to make serious money with AdSense. If you're missing that information, you're just throwing money away.

AdSense Tips: The #1 Biggest Mistake

It's very easy to make a lot of money with AdSense.

I know it's easy because in a short space of time, I've managed to turn the sort of AdSense revenues that wouldn't keep me in candy into the kind of income that pays the
mortgage on a large suburban house, makes the payments on a family car and does a whole lot more besides.

But that doesn't mean there aren't any number of mistakes that you can make when trying to increase your AdSense income - and any one of those mistakes can keep you earning
candy money instead of earning the sort of cash that can pay for your home.

There is one mistake though that will totally destroy your chances of earning a decent AdSense income before you've even started.

That mistake is making your ad look like an ad.

No one wants to click on an ad. Your users don't come to your site looking for advertisements. They come looking for content and their first instinct is to ignore everything else. And they've grown better and better at doing just that.
Today's Internet users know exactly what a banner ad looks like. They know what it means, where to expect it - and they know exactly how to ignore it. In fact most Internet users don't even see the banners at the top of the Web pages they're reading or the skyscrapers running up the side.

But when you first open an AdSense account, the format and layout of the ads you receive will have been designed to look just like ads. That's the default setting for AdSense - and that's the setting that you have to work hard to change.

That's where AdSense gets interesting. There are dozens of different strategies that smart AdSense account holders can use to stop their ads looking like ads - and make them look
attractive to users. They include choosing the right formats for your ad, placing them in the most effective spots on the page, putting together the best combination of ad units, enhancing your site with the best keywords, selecting the most ideal colors for the font and the background, and a whole
lot more besides.

AdSense Tips: The #1 Biggest Mistake

The biggest AdSense mistake you can make is leaving your AdSense units looking like ads.

The second biggest mistake you can make is to not know the best strategies to change them.

Learn the money-making strategies that thousands of others have learned to dramatically multiply their AdSense income!
